HAMBURG Sud recently announced the last of six 3,752-TEU newbuilds has been christened the Bahia Negra at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering's (DMSE) yard in Okpo, South Korea.

The vessel, scheduled to be delivered to the German carrier on August 23, will be phased into a service linking Asia, South Africa and the east coast of South America.

The Bahia Negra has been named after a small town on the northern tip of Paraguay that lies in a region where the country meets Brazil and Bolivia.

Between now and 2010 Hamburg Sud will have a further 16 container ships built at DSME and at its Romanian sister yard. The new box ships will range in size from 5,500 TEU to 6,300 TEU, a company statement said.
